Star Trek: The Barathrum Expanse

So I don't really want to do this total rip off of Star Trek's Vanguard series or even DS9, but I still like the idea of a "Outposts" on the borders of unexplored space.

The core of this is the classic wilderness/dungeon exploration we get from the early D&D modules.

Our base will be the standard Deep Space Station and of course the players will be members of an Archer Class ship. The Barathrum Expanse is a stretch of space on the outer borders of the TOS era Federation space.

The Barathrum Expanse was once the outer edge of a vast empire ruled by a dead race called the Keres a believed off shoot of the near mythical Preservers. The Keres unlike many of the first to be "created" by the Preservers, it would seem never attained a true enlightenment, or evolved into incorporeal immortals, like the Metron or the Organians.

The Keres created many species of intelligent beings that now inhabit much of the Expanse.

Junuk the Burners are a species of humanoids that once where major players in local Expanse, until unresolved divisions on the species home-world thrust them into a civil war that has lasted over a hundred years. Because of the century long war, and the massive disregard for the planets environment and the well being of the species as a whole, most of the Burners have massive cellular damage and mutations caused by the use of radioactive weaponry and backwards engineered Keres Bio Weapons. The Burners tend to hide these deformities beneath layers of clothes and armor.

Once a thriving Warp level society the Burners have lost much of their ability to Travel the Expanse relying now mostly on the favors of other Species in the Expanse or hired Transports. Both the Ulmacha and the Huzheen are on the record as extorting hefty profits from the Civil War and have played both sides in the conflicts for as long as the War has been going on.

Starfleet has a strict non-intervention policy in place and trade embargoes with the Burners because of the Helgrande Incident.
